Not The Same: A Capella (04/02/15)

In today's lesson, we had to look at and listen to three songs and discuss the tempo/BPM and vocal  type/style for each song. The three songs were;

  1. Not The Same by a group called 'A Capella'
  2. Vicks Beatbox Choir Extended 2 Minute Version
  3. Labrinth - Let The Sunshine (ACM Gospel Choir)
The first song, 'Not The Same: A Capella' is an interesting piece of music, as it is built up from multiple different voices to create a song. Certain voices act as different instruments in the song. After listing to the snog many times, I believe there is around 108 beats per minute (BPM) in this track. This means that this track is on the brink of being classed as an 'Andante' and 'Moderato' classed track. These words refer to the pace of the track and is referred to in an Italian translation.
For a track to be classed as 'Andante', there would have to be around 76-108 BPM, whereas for a track to be classed as 'Moderato', the track has to be around 108-120 BPM.

There is a beatboxer who features in the whole of the song. His beatbox represents a standard 4/8-beat drum fill featuring a few quirky changes to the beat for effect which really work.

The backing vocalist(s) start the song with a baritone style of depth in their voice. Deeper in duration of the song, it then changes to more of a falsetto style as the 'choir' become higher in pitch, however, still reverting back to the baritone style.
